Top prospect Stephen Strasburg made his spring training debut on Tuesday, pitching two scoreless innings in the Washington Nationals' 9-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Strasburg threw 15 of his 27 pitches for strikes and allowed two hits, successive two-out singles by Don Kelly and Alex Avila in the second.

The Yankees again enjoyed a day away from the ballpark as part of manager Joe Girardi's new tradition, and it was a hit with newcomers and veterans who enjoyed last season's pool hall tournament.The trip's value was seen almost immediately as the club was hit with the first twinge of potential distraction that often requires as much stress-free bonding as possible.While the team was enjoying its trip to an arcade, Alex Rodriguez was again watching his name hit the headlines in connection to a story involving performance-enhancing drugs.This year's story so far is not about Rodriguez or his use of PEDs, which he acknowledged last season, and so the fallout is expected to be much smaller.

A top New York Yankees executive was charged with driving under the influence in Tampa. Hillsborough County Jail reports show that Mark Newman, the Yankees' senior vice president of baseball operations, was arrested Monday night. He reportedly refused to take a blood-alcohol test. He was released several hours later on $500 bail.

Nick Johnson is working on a new hitting philosophy this spring. CC Sabathia is trying to refine his pitching motion. Their results couldn't have been more dissimilar Tuesday. Johnson pulled homers to right in each of his at-bats, while Sabathia was rocked for five runs in two-plus innings in the New York Yankees' 12-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Texas Rangers have acquired right-hander Edwar Ramirez from the New York Yankees for cash. Ramirez was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Feb. 28 to make room for Chan Ho Park. In 20 relief appearances for the Yankees last season, Ramirez had 22 strikeouts in 22 innings. He was 5-1 with a 3.55 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 55 1-3 innings for New York in 2008, when his 10.3 strikeouts per nine...

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera threw 34 pitches during his first batting practice session Monday. Rivera has taken a slower approach at spring training for the past few years. The 40-year-old right-hander went 3-3 with 44 saves and a 1.76 ERA in 66 games last season. "Delicious," Rivera said of facing hitters.

Alfredo Aceves may be pushing his way into the thick of the battle for the No. 5 spot in the New York Yankees' starting rotation. Aceves tossed four perfect innings Monday in a 6-0 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates in a split squad game for both teams. In two outings this spring, both against the Pirates, the right-hander has retired all 18 batters he's faced.

New York Yankees designated hitter Nick Johnson missed his second straight game on Friday because of a stiff lower back. Johnson was hurt during batting practice Thursday when his spikes got caught on the mats used in the cage. He said his back "loosen up" after an exercise program before Friday's game with Tampa Bay.
